Lux was bred at Zangersheide Stud and until 1998 he was ridden successfully at Grand Prix level by Jos Lansink and Ben Schröder, under which he was placed 2nd in the 1993 World Championships for young horses at Lanaken. He was then ridden by Jerry Smit and notched up several wins in 1999 including 3rd at the Hickstead Nations Cup, 1st at the Valkenswaard Grand Prix, 4th at the Calgary Grand Prix, and 2nd in the World Cup at Berlin. In 2000 Lux Z won an unprecedented £450,000 prize for winning two consecutive Grand Prix, he represented Italy with rider Jerry Smit at the Sydney Olympics. Lux Z is ranked 17th in the World Breeding Championships for Sporthorses based on his own winnings in 1998 and 1999.
Lord Calando is just like the world-famous jumping stallion Carthago Z (Capitaol I), bred out of Perra (Calando I). Sire of many international showjumping horses such as Locanda(Marcus Ehning) and Lukas (Emma Wester) .
Lord was a real legend in Holstein for his production of international class jumping horses and elegant horses with exceptional movement, himself and advanced event horse with strong TB influence (being by Ladykiller)
Ahorn Z is famous in the Holsteiner breed for producing international show jumpers and successful breeding stallions. His famous sons ACORD I (international grand prix horse with Hap Hansen) and ACORD II (an exceptionally popular breeding stallion, Reserve Champion of the German Federal Show Jumping Championship for 5-year-olds, and Grand Champion of the 100 Day Stallion Test). Ahorn Z is a son of the legendary ALME, who has produced many top international jumpers and breeding stallions. Ahorn's dam HEUREKA, competed internationally (winning the Grand Prix of Aachen) and is ranked as one of the best broodmares in the world. Ahorn Z is a full brother to ARGENTINA Z, dam of Olympic Gold Medallist and World Cup Champion, RATINA Z
Almé at the age of five, showed great potential,
ridden by Bernard Geneste. After his first season
at stud, he was sold to the American Fred Lorimer
Graham, who competed him for the next two years.
Almé went on to compete internationally with
François Mathy and Johan Heins, and sired
many international performers. Before he left France
for Belgium, he produced the stallion sons, Galoubet,
I Love You, and Jalisco, all of whom competed internationally.
At the time, Almé stood at Zangersheide, the
horses bred there were being registered in the Hanoverian
studbook but this did not prevent the Almé genes
making their way to Holstein where they were happy
to use Ahorn Z (out of the Holstein mare, Heureka)
and Aloubé Z and Athlet Z, both out of Hanoverian
mares of Gotthard breeding.
In the south west of Germany, Alexis Z - who is out
of the Hanoverian mare, Wonne, herself an international
performer with Peter Schmitz, was enormously successful
and he was soon used in both Holstein and Hannover.
In France the breeders were also keen to use the
blood of Almé, and at least some breeders
used Galoubet (another international performer) before
he was exported to the United States in 1983. He
produced Quick Star and Quatoubet from his first
crop and is currently brilliantly represented by
three times World Cup winner, Baloubet de Rouet.
The Almé grandson, Quidam de Revel has more
recently been used in Holstein.
The breeding of Ibrahim with the daughters of the
Thoroughbred, Ultimate was truly miraculous. It was
from this marriage that the best products were born.
Almé is the best example.
Some of his best stallions were : Almé, Digne
Espoir (Kibrahim), Double Espoir, Elf III, Quastor,
Dynamique, Ukase, Tanael, Cor De Chasse in France,
Fantastique, Hedjaz in Belgium, Viveur, Que D'Espoir
(Switzerland)
In CSI, his best products were : Norvale, Quo Vadis,
Orsietain, Tango C (1st Berlin Grand Prix ), Taxi
De Sartilly, Uri B, Varin, Val De Loire B (Olympic
Games, Montreal, Horse of the Year USA), Valacampagne,
Alcazar D, Artaban, Bavolette, Denis de Vauptain,
Iman d'Or …
Ibrahim was classed 1st in the list of French Stallions
producing winners in CSO in 1970, 1974 & 2nd
in 1971, 1972, 1973 & 1975.
Even today the influence of Ibrahim is strong. In the six year old finals at Fontainebleau in 2002 an analysis of the 20 top stallions (ie. those with at least 3 horses in the event) shows Ibrahim blood in 15 of the 20, especially through Almé but also Jalisco!
When the German Warmblood breeders in the 60s and 70s turned to the Thoroughbred for refinement and athleticism, there were a number of important stallions that played a key role in the shaping the modern sport horse – none was more significant than Ladykiller.
While he stood in the far north of Germany, in Holstein,
his influence continues to spread… in 2002
the most expensive horse at the prestigious Fences
Auction in France, was l’Arc de Triomphe, sold
for 460,000 euros, a world record for a three year
old – and he is a direct descendent of the
great Ladykiller, indeed with a double cross on the
sire line since he is by Landor S, by Landadel by
Landgraf by Ladykiller, out of Novella out of Furth,
also by Ladykiller.
Ladykiller was born in England in 1961 but he was
no star on the racetrack, racing three times in two
years and rating only a 80.5 kilo handicap – which
luckily for him, was 0.5 kilos more than the minimum
required for a Thoroughbred stallion to be accepted
into German breeding ranks.
Before his death in 1979,
he sired 35 stallion sons including the twin pillars
of Holstein: Landgraf and Lord. Both it should be
noted out of mares with a good percentage of Thoroughbred
blood – Lord’s dam was a full blood,
while Landgraf’s dam was 25% Thoroughbred.
